Eleven storage ideas that actually work in a small Indian flat

Small-home storage is not about buying more furniture. It is about finding the volume you already own and are not using — and in most Indian apartments that is a surprising amount.

Start with the vertical space

• Take every wardrobe and wall unit to the slab, not to 7 feet. That last 18 inches is free storage you already paid for.
• Add a pull-down hanging rod so the high section is genuinely reachable rather than ceremonial.
• Use the toe-kick under base cabinets. A 4-inch drawer along a 10-foot run holds all your baking trays.
• Loft above the bathroom door is usually 2 ft deep and completely unused.

Then make the furniture work twice

• A hydraulic bed base holds an entire winter wardrobe.
• A banquette with lift-up seats replaces a dining set and a sideboard.
• A console with a fold-down leaf becomes a desk from 9 to 6 and disappears by dinner.
• Deep drawers beat shelves in a kitchen — you see everything without kneeling.

Finally, subtract

Three of our smallest projects gained the most from removing a wall unit rather than adding one. A small room that is 80% full reads as spacious. The same room at 100% full reads as cramped, no matter how clever the joinery is.
